Milwaukee Montana Tower Notes
All the 7 interlocking towers covered in these notes were built as part of the Milwaukee Roads Pacific Extension. All of them have to be assumed as being still in use in 1931, which is when this Milwaukee Interlocking book was published. Finding out the closing dates of these towers is difficult. Sappington as far as can be ascertained was the last of these Montana towers to close, sometime in the early 1950’s. I have never seen any photographs of any of these towers at all. I would appreciate any additional information that is known. -peteret2002

  1. Drummond
This tower was opened in June 1917 and had some revision of it’s facilities in 1920 (no details known). I have found no additional details on this tower.
  2. Huson
This tower was a 12 foot by 15 foot brick half frame tower. It was placed in service on the 23rd September 1909. It was built, owned, maintained and operated by the Milwaukee Road.
  3. Piedmont
This tower was placed in service on the 2nd December 1917. In the same way as Huson all payments were the responsibility of the Milwaukee Road.
  4. Rocker
As built this tower was 10 foot by 10 foot. In 1936 it was rebuilt to 10 by 12 feet. The original tower was put in to service on the 17th December 1913. Like others, all expenses were the responsibility of the Milwaukee Road.
  5. Sappington
As built this tower was 10feet 4 inches by 10feet 4 inches. The tower was put in to service on the 24th September 1908 and all expenses were the responsibility of the Milwaukee Road. It is thought this was the last Milwaukee Tower in Montana to close.
  6. Silver Bow
This tower was a 10 foot by 10 foot 2 storey building. This tower plus extension was put in to service on the 27th October 1913. The original plant, was built by the Northern Pacific (date unknown). The Milwaukee owned 56.44% and the NP 43.56%. Maintenance and operation expenses were split 50/50 between the NP & Milwaukee Road. It is clear from the records the BA∓P were involved in the running of the tower, that of course being due to it being their means of interchange at Silver Bow.
  7. Sinclair
This tower was a 12 foot by 16 foot half brick building. Opened on the 1st of July 1909. All expenses were down to the Milwaukee Road.
